Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh is seeking a dependable, hands-on, and motivated individual to join our team as a Construction Site Assistant Intern. The intern will gain on-site experience by supporting the daily operations of the Construction Department, assisting with various stages of homebuilding, and working alongside staff, volunteers, and partner families. This role offers valuable exposure to residential construction, team collaboration, and nonprofit housing development in action.

The position requires in-person availability at least three days per week, with a maximum of 25 hours per week (up to 4-5 hours per day) over the course of 12-15 weeks.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist with all aspects of hands-on construction tasks including, but not limited to, demolition, site preparation, framing, insulation, drywall, flooring, roofing, finish carpentry, and landscaping
  • Participate in a variety of projects, including new construction, rehabilitation, critical home repair, and weatherization
  • Lead small groups of volunteers and facilitate safe, positive, and productive experiences on site
  • Maintain site safety by adhering to Habitat construction safety policies, modeling best practices and guidelines, providing volunteer instruction, and monitoring site activity
  • Complete assigned tasks in a timely and efficient manner, demonstrating accountability and reliability
  • Follow the guidance and structure of the construction team, collaborating professionally with supervisors, staff, and volunteers
     

Preferred Qualifications & Requirements

  • Must be over the age of 18
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Previous experience in construction (academic, volunteer, or professional) is strongly preferred
  • Comfortable working outdoors and performing physical tasks in varying weather conditions
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to engage and motivate volunteers
  • Ability to work independently and follow direction from site supervisors and team leads
  • Willingness to comply with safety protocols and participate in hands-on learning
  • Professional demeanor, punctuality, and commitment to consistent attendance
